 Christmas Trees and Fire Safety

holidayIn the United States, fire departments respond to an average of 230 home fires that state with Christmas trees each year per the National Fire Protection Association.  With the holiday season fast approaching, please keep the following in mind while getting into the Christmas spirit:

  1. Pick a tree with fresh green needles that do not fall off when touched.
  2. Cut 2 inches from the base of the trunk before placing the tree in the stand. This will allow the tree to absorb water more readily to keep from drying out.
  3. Be sure you add water to the tree stand daily.
  4. When placing a tree in your home:
    • Keep it at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. Nearly one in every four Christmas tree fires is caused by a tree being placed too close to a heat source.
    • Make sure it does not block an exit.
  5. Use lights listed by a qualified testing laboratory.
  6. Be sure you are using indoor light indoors and outdoor lights outdoors.
  7. Examine Christmas lights for worn, broken cords or loose bulb connections. Almost one of every three home Christmas tree fires are cause by electrical issues.
  8. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for the maximum number of light strands you can connect.
  9. NEVER use lit candles to decorate a tree.
  10. ALWAYS turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
  11. At the end of Christmas season, do not leave a dried-out Christmas tree in your home, garage, or leaning on your house outside. New Hanover County has an Annual Christmas Tree Collection Program for residents to drop-off Christmas trees at no charge. For dates and drop-off locations, visit the New Hanover County: Communication and Outreach website for details: http://news.nhcgov.com.

Hurricane Matthew

Hurricane Matthew Relief

Clean-up Efforts

We were all holding our breath last month hoping that little to no damage would come to any of our properties during Hurricane Matthew. We appreciate our owners and tenants who reported any damage to their units.  This allows us to address them as quickly as possible. Bryant Real Estate is also very grateful for our patient tenants, who were extremely understanding regarding the large backlog of storm-related work orders for tree removal, yard cleanup, roof damage and fence repair.

Relief Efforts

Lastly, we want to say a big “Thank you” to all our tenants, owners, and employees who donated clothing items to the Wilmington Fire Department.  Items were collected to help people in our community and surrounding areas who lost their belongings due flooding from Hurricane Matthew. As a community, we are all grateful to have caring and compassionate neighbors that look for ways to help others in a time of need.

As a reminder, hurricane season officially ends November 30th. We all still need to be prepared in case another disaster strikes.

Epicurean Evening

Delicious food from Wilmington chefs

Delicious food from Wilmington chefs

Bryant Real Estate attended and participated in the Epicurean Evening, which is a Black-Tie fundraising event for the Methodist Home for Children. The evening’s events included sampling fantastic food from chefs around Wilmington competing to win the Copper Kettle, a silent auction, and a live auction. The proceeds from this event go to fund the Methodist Home for Children, which is a nonprofit organization providing community-based services to children and families throughout North Carolina. These services range from in-home services, like family preservation and vocational training, to residential services, like juvenile justice assessment centers and foster care. Methodist Home for Children also provides mental health services for youth in North Carolina.

Renter Beware!

Craigslist is a popular website for searching listings for apartments, condos, and homes for rent; but please, do your due diligence when pursuing this avenue to meet your housing needs. Craigslist and web sites like it are easy to search for what you need, but it is equally easy for scammers to advertise properties for rent or sale that are not theirs to advertise. Bryant Real Estate never advertises vacant properties on Craigslist. Our website www.bryantlongtermrentals.com is where you can find all current vacancies.

Craigslist

If you are researching a listing found on Craigslist, keep in mind the following tips:

  1. Call or visit the property management company, agency, or owner (if listed) to inquire about the property.
  2. Google search the landlord’s name or company and the home address you are considering renting because it is likely you will find some enlightening information if the advertisement is a scam that someone else has uncovered.
  3. If the person you contact in the listing does not require a rental application process that includes: criminal background check, credit check, rental history, and employment/income verification, then you are most likely dealing with a scammer.
  4. Do not allow someone to wire you money, write you a check or money order while you send them cash, or they ask you to send money in exchange. Their check or money transfer could be fraudulent, and you could be held responsible.
  5. Craigslist does not offer a buyer guarantee where Craigslist has approved a safe transaction with the seller and offering buyer protection. This site does not offer that service and should be reported to Craigslist.

Craigslist also has helpful information regarding scams: http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams.
